Egypt - Philae Temple

Philae Temple is on an island between the upper and lower dams. It was relocated because the dams caused the water to rise above its original location.

As it's on an island, we'll be needing a boat. Hmm, which one...

Typical rocky-outcrop. Probably the very top of an old island.

Most of these sites have their own history. Originally an Egyptian temple, this is a Greco-Roman addition - and it shows.

This is the more original part. The faces on the columns are of Hathor - the cow goddess.

Some decorated columns.

A bog-standard temple entrance - the 2 pylons with a door in the middle.

A bog-standard pylon decoration - pharo chopping off the heads of his enemies while the gods look on approvingly. They knew how to do things back then.

Same design on the other pylon but this one's been vandalised - by the christians. Apparently, to show that these gods have no power, they would bugger up one side and leave the other on intact. Shrug.

And then they would put their own stamps on the place.

Nicely carved ceiling, here.

Pharo offering some goodies to the gods.

And then they made me king.
