Egypt - Abu Simbel

From Aswan, it was a short flight to Abu Simbel.

From the plane, flying up Lake Nassau - put there by the Aswan Dam.

The Abu Simbel temples were relocated 30m up from their original position before the water sunk them. This is the top of where they used to be.

The are two temples. On the left, the top bloke; RamesesII and on the right his wife's; Nefetari.

That's me in front of Rameses'. It was put back together they way it was found with one of the statues broken off from an earthquake.

There he is, the man himself.

Rameses cartouche.

Around the base are carvings of enslaved Nubians. This was on the main route from Nubia to Egypt so any Nubian army would see this on the way in and know EXACTLY what was in store for them.

Nefetari's temple.

There's Kim with the good lady.

And that's a shot inside the temple. Which is, of course, strictly forbidden unless you slip the guard - whose job it is to stop you taking photos inside - a little something. He wasn't impressed with my offering of 1 Egyptian pound. Then he probably wouldn't be impressed with any number of Egyptian pounds and he really should be doing his job. So there.

The back of the temples is a concrete hill cunningly disguised as a sandy hill.

And this was the very dodgy plane that took us there. Mahmoud, who hates any type of flying, was close to crapping himself. I helpfully pointed out that old planes have undergone a lot of testing and it's the new ones that would probably kill you. I thought he needed to know that because we had another flight coming up on a brand new airbus.
